Abstract

This paper describes a technique for recognizing planar objects in three-dimensional space. However, the object's domain is not restricted to purely 2 dimensional items; it includes fairly flat real objects such as a pair of scissors. To tackle realistic matching problems, the proposed method is invariant to changes within a prescribed range of perspective viewpoints, scaling, shift and reasonable degree of occlusion. In brief, objects are recognized by a modified dynamic link matching. Our experiments show that the system is very successful in recognizing deformed objects due to perspective distortion, even in rather cluttered scenes.
